Vertical rig down of mast land drilling rig — Kuwait

In January 2020 a Kuwaiti drilling company contacted BLCS International for engineering support and on-site assistance for the dismantling of the mast of one of their onshore drilling installations.

The challenge was that the mast had to be disassembled vertically after the substructure had been stabilized by installing additional steel beams according to OEM instructions. The substructure had suffered considerable damage due to an operational error, making conventional disassembly impossible.

BLCS International and partner HETCO Heavy and Specialized Carriers Co. developed a complete dismantling plan comprising lifting plans, risk analysis, and a detailed step-by-step procedure. The plan was accepted by the drilling company and their insurance company.

BLCS International provided the experienced rigging supervisor and riggers. HETCO supplied the cranes, lifting equipment and crew. The crane fleet mobilized within 5 days included a Demag CC2800 (600T crawler, 78m main boom), a Demag AC200 (200T rough terrain) and a Demag AC435 (150T rough terrain).

Under the watchful eye of the drilling company, insurance surveyor and location owner, the mast was vertically dismantled and all heavy components of the drill floor removed. Highest lift: Crown section — 14.0T at 63.0m. Heaviest load: Drawworks — 62.0T at 14.2m.

The customer was very satisfied with the cooperation between both companies, who planned and executed the project together within a short timeframe and within budget.
